How can I give through my IRA?
Eligibility:
- You must be age 70 1⁄2 or older.
- The gift must be made by December 31 to count toward your current year’s RMD.
Please note that for tax purposes, the gift date is the date that the funds leave your IRA account and not the postmark on the envelope. Please allow enough time for the check to clear to ensure that the funds are withdrawn during your preferred tax year.
Benefits:
- Reduces taxable income
- Satisfies all or part of your RMD
- Supports adults with developmental disabilities

How do I donate stocks or mutual funds?
A gift of appreciated stocks, bonds, or mutual funds is an excellent way to give. You may receive a charitable deduction for the full market value of the securities and potentially avoid paying capital gains taxes.
To initiate a securities transfer, please contact Kate Fitzsimmons at (415) 686-1036 or kate@helperssf.org so we can provide our brokerage information and ensure your gift is processed smoothly.
How do I include Helpers in my estate plan?
One of the most meaningful ways to support Helpers Community is by including us in your estate plans. You can name Helpers as a beneficiary of your will, living trust, retirement account, or life insurance policy.
Here is sample language you can share with your attorney or advisor:
For a General Bequest:
“I give to Helpers Community, a nonprofit organization located at 2626 Fulton Street, San Francisco, CA 94118, federal tax ID number 94-1546037, the sum of $___ [or __% of my estate], to be used for its general charitable purposes.”
For a Residual Bequest:
“I give to Helpers Community, located at 2626 Fulton Street, San Francisco, CA 94118, federal tax ID number 94-1546037, all [or __%] of the rest, residue, and remainder of my estate, both real and personal, to be used for its general charitable purposes.”
For a Contingent Bequest:
“If [Name of Primary Beneficiary] does not survive me, I give to Helpers Community, located at 2626 Fulton Street, San Francisco, CA 94118, federal tax ID number 94-1546037, the sum of $___ [or __% of my estate] to be used for its general charitable purposes.”
